Rhonda Smith
Circuit Coordinator

Rhonda Smith and familyAlthough Rhonda has competed at the chapter shows for several years, this is her first year as a board member. As an active competitor, Circuit Coordinator seemed a natural fit.

Like many of us, Rhonda's "horse illness" had an early onset. She grew up in a family with zero knowledge of the equine world, and even less desire to learn. Still, somehow she managed to find a way to be near horses. After some nice neighbors (with horses, of course), explained to her parents that horses would keep their "soon to be teenage" daughter out of trouble and away from boys, her parents decided to look into getting her first horse. Her father now claims it was so she would lose interest and "grow out of it." Thirty years later, her father, and HUSBAND, are still waiting for that to happen! She has been riding dressage for 20 years. Fortunately, her love for horses has not changed, but the quality of horses she owns has improved!!! She currently has 5 horses (4 if her husband is reading this). She has 2 older mares who are "part of the family," 2 youngsters with great "potential," and a wonderful little Dutch horse that she plans to show up thru the ranks over the next few years.

She says, "God has blessed me with a fantastic, supportive husband, Greg, who is also an Equine vet—strategic on my part, don't ya think!!!" He is a co-owner of East County Large Animal Practice in El Cajon, California. Their 10 year old daughter, Emma, also enjoys riding. She has recently taken up jumping, as would any teenager in a family that owns five dressage horses and zero jumping horses. In May of this year they moved to Ramona, California, where they are in the process of building a palace for her equine comrades—and her two-legged ones, too, making what to her is a not-so-difficult choice between landscaping and an arena.

When they are not working or playing with the horses, she and her husband enjoy the East Cape of Baja and deep sea fishing with their family.

She's looking forward to meeting more chapter members in the months to come. "We have so many wonderful resources through our chapter," she says. "Please feel free to contact any of us with your thoughts and ideas!! Have a great remainder of 2010… and see you all at the banquet!!
