USDF "L" Program

Hey! I didn't know that!

The USDF "L" program isn't just for judge wanna-be's—it's for everyone with an interest in becoming a better horseperson. Auditing sessions A, B, and C can increase a rider's dressage knowledge tenfold.

Session A: The Biomechanics of the Horse

Do you want to know the difference between "classical dressage" and "poodle dressage"? Do you know how you can improve your horse's gaits and physique (conformation and muscling), and improve his attitude and submission? This session also covers the United States Equestrian Federation, Inc., dressage rules (everyone could use a refresher here) and other important information.

Session B: Gaits and The Training Scale

Gaits, the training scale, the principles of increased engagement and elevation, and the movements from Training to Second Level are reviewed. Each movement in the tests is discussed, with emphasis on the purpose of the movement, its proper execution, the most common faults and suitable vocabulary. The auditor should leave this session with an understanding of the "how" and "why" of the movements, what the most important part of the movement is (its "essence"), and the evasions horses will try to avoid the work of the movement. At the end, the group will discuss the vocabulary used to describe the movements and the faults observed in relation to the movements. This session is the session to attend for riders who are having trouble figuring out what the comments on their test sheets really mean.

Session C: Collective Marks and Freestyle

Do you want a higher rider score? Do you ever wonder why your horse only scores a 6 on gaits and a 5 on impulsion? Or why you received a 4 for submission when "he did everything"? This session answers those questions and more. It also gives insight into scoring freestyles, so you know what the judge is looking for when it's time to design one.

A rider's education is never finished. These sessions will greatly enhance your understanding of the sport of dressage, so plan on attending. It's more than just judging! Please download the AUDITOR'S APPLICATION, complete it and mail to Donna Richardson (address is on the application). Afraid to commit to more than one session? That's OK. Sign up as you go. We just need a head count before the actual date so that we can make sure to have handouts and seats available. Hope to see you at the next session!
